What you will learn from this video:

  • Water can change the shape of land.
  • Wind can change the shape of land too.
  • We can slow down or prevent these changes by using science.

2nd Grade Assignment from the Science Lab:

Mystery Science Lesson: “Why is there Sand at the Beach?”

PLEASE CLICK ON THE LINK BELOW:

In this Mystery, students investigate the effects of rocks tumbling in a river. Based on their observations, they construct an explanation for why there is sand at a beach.

In the activity, Rocking the River, students pretend to be a river and tear up pieces of construction paper to model what happens to rocks as they travel along the river.

2nd Grade Assignment from the Science Lab:

Mystery Science Lesson: “If you floated down a river where would you end up?"

Please click on the link below:

https://mysteryscience.com/water/mystery-1/mapping-earth-s-surface-features/112?code=NTE2MjI3MA&t=student

In this Mystery, students develop a model of the earth’s surface and use it to discover an important principle about how rivers work. In the activity, Paper Mountains, students take turns using a spray bottle to make rain fall on paper models of mountains to observe patterns of how water and rivers flow.

You may download/print the sheet below for the activity or simply use 8x10 sized paper of your own. Your can use regular tape for the "dots."

2nd Grade Science Lab Assignments:

HABITATS
Africa has different habitats. Some are hot and some are dry. Others are wet. Look at the map of Africa in the photo below to find deserts, rain forests, and other African habitats. Each habitat has many different plants and animals that live there. Look at the different plants and animals from the 4 different habitats in Africa and answer the following questions:

1) What does the Map show?

2) Choose 2 habitats and compare the plants and animals that live there. How are they alike? How are they different? (Think about what they need to survive)

You can have a family member answer the same 2 questions for the two Habitats that you didn’t choose.

Hands-On Activity: "How Desert Plants Survive?"

Parents: Some items that can be used to replace the “wax paper” are plastic wrap or aluminum foil.

If you do not have colored construction paper have your child draw the leaves on notebook paper and color them.

If you do not not have a spray bottle you can damp a sponge or piece of cloth with water.
